An extensive 60-day voyage around the Land Down Under was terminated in the wake of the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the ship on a remote coastal location.

Suzanne Rees had been trekking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the excursion for a pause. The liner sailed away leaving her and came back several hours later after the personnel became aware the passenger was unaccounted for.

A major rescue mission located her body the next day.

Officials are looking into the incident, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

Head of the shipping company announced that passengers and staff on the ship were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and prior technical problems".

Via official communication, he mentioned that guests would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to arrange the travel back of the travelers via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Commander" banning any new passengers from getting on the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its return.

Chronology of Events

The ship first departed the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the journey at the time of the senior passenger's passing. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the voyage.

Passengers on board - who generally pay large sums of money to join the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the possibility of walking or underwater exploration.

Family Reaction

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "surprised and distressed that the vessel left the location after an scheduled outing without my mother".

In her statement, she portrayed her mother as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a member of a walking group.

"Based on limited facts we have been informed, it looks that there was a breakdown of attention and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She further stated that she wished the inquiry would be able to determine what "the organization should have undertaken that might have protected Mother's existence".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm day, and she fell ill on the uphill trek," she stated.

"She was asked her to return, unescorted. Then the boat left, apparently without performing a roll call.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or soon after, mum passed away, alone."

Organization Position

In a statement, the Head affirmed that the organization was "collaborating extensively with authorities to support their investigation".

He stated that the organization was "extremely apologetic that this has occurred" and had provided its full support to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Practices

The liner caters for up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty personnel, according to official details. It was purpose-built to access isolated regions of the Australian shoreline and is fitted with "auxiliary vessels" - compact vessels used to transport travelers on land visits.

Events of this nature are infrequent, and passenger vessels have procedures to track which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to maritime specialists.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] aboard simply isn't an possibility," a specialist commented.

Cruise lines consider these procedures with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to stop such occurrences from taking place," the authority further stated.
