Thomas Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Ace Leaves Egotism Outside.
A single omission was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that securing World Cup glory will likely need help from the talented midfielder, although it is also on the midfielder to adapt to the game plans and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about using it appropriately. Personal talent is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when fame prevails. Still, a point has been made.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of last month’s squad. He observed the national side secure their spot at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach mention loving the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham displays a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone must help him and build a atmosphere where he can channel this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are building as a team.”
Bellingham dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has not played for England since spring and has found it hard to reach his best this year but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his performance in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this vision regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager talked about one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden netting strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an more effective one.
