Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
