Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
He commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward following their development".
The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released messages showed that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's choice to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the Board," the company commented.
Legislative Background
This development arrives after the two houses of the US legislature voted on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its files on Epstein.
The measure will then move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. Trump has stated he plans to endorse the measure, after reversing his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to link the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Response
After the messages were released with the wider community, he said he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish trust and repair relationships with the persons most important to me".
Career Background
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a researcher, verified that he was ceased to be associated with the institution.
He entered the leadership of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
