‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to success with Athletic Bilbao

The debut appearance the Athletic striker competed in English soil, an young representing the reserve team against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he appeared in England, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did their duty: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; following that, the brief trip to the airport and another flight to the UK, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary flanked by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he says.

The player believed it hard enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, dropped, a demotion and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to live the best days of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then go home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. Every small aspect: execute them.

“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. The striker moved emotionally in that year, aged 23, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
